Metformin Hydrochloride Extended-Release Tablets USP 500 mg
Metformin is a biguanide which exerts its effect mainly by decreasing gluconeogenesis and by increasing peripheral utilization of glucose. Metformin decreases hepatic glucose production and intestinal absorption of glucose and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. It acts only in the presence of endogenous insulin.

Adults : Initially 500 mg once daily, then increased if necessary up to 2g once daily, dose to be increased gradually, every 10–15 days, dose to be taken with evening meal; Alternatively increased to 1g twice daily, dose to be taken with meals, alternative dose only to be used if control not achieved with once daily dose regimen. If control is still not achieved, change to standard release tabletsor as directed by physcian.
2. Type 2 diabetes mellitus [reduction in risk or delay of onset]
Adults 18-74 years : Initially 500 mg once daily, then increased if necessary up to 2g once daily, dose to be increased gradually, every 10–15 days, dose to be taken with evening meal or as directed by physcian.
